E28 Inside SHOW Baldwin: How Families Are Filling Alabama’s Disability Resource Gap

Community advocates represent SHOW Baldwin

SHOW Baldwin, which stands for Special Humans Outreach and Wellness, is a nonprofit based in Baldwin County focused on supporting children and families in the special needs community. But what makes this organization different isn't just what they do. It's why they had to do it in the first place.

How SHOW Baldwin Started

SHOW Baldwin didn't begin as an organization. It started with a conversation.

A group of mothers sat around a table at a local restaurant trying to figure out how to raise money for a child who needed a properly fitted wheelchair. Their goal was simple: raise enough money to help one child. But that conversation quickly turned into something bigger.

As they talked, they realized the issue wasn't just one child or one wheelchair. It was a pattern. Families in Baldwin County were struggling to access basic resources, adaptive equipment, and inclusive opportunities for their children. So instead of waiting for a solution, they created one.

Within a month, SHOW Baldwin was born.

What SHOW Baldwin Actually Does

Today, SHOW Baldwin provides several types of support for families:

  • Inclusive and adaptive events for children who are left out of traditional community activites

  • A lending library for medical and adaptive equipment, helping families access items that insurance won't cover

  • Monthly support initiatives, like providing meals to families to relieve financial and emotional stress

These are not luxury services; they are needs. And in many cases, they're needs that are not being met anywhere else.

When Advocacy Becomes Personal

This episode also shares the story of Heather Hestand, one of the founding members of SHOW Baldwin.

Heather has been a driving force behind the organization and a constant source of support for families in the community. Recently, she was diagnosed with stage four cancer after suffering a sudden and severe medical event.

For families of children with disabilities, there is a fear that doesn't get talked about enough. What happens to your child if something happens to you?

For Heather, that question is no longer hypothetical. And the answer, in many ways, comes down to financial stability.

In response, the community has stepped in.

A GoFundMe was launched to help support Heather's family and to create financial security for her daughter's future. Local businesses like Zavros's Boutique and Counter Culture have hosted fundraising events. Donations have come in from people who don't even know the family personally.

And now, SHOW Baldwin is hosting a Gratitude Gala on June 13, 2026 in Foley, Alabama, with the goal of raising additional funds for the Hestand family.

The event is designed to be inclusive, family-friendly, and accessible.

How You Can Help SHOW Baldwin

If you want to support SHOW Baldwin or contribute to the ongoing efforts to help the Hestand family, there are several ways to get involved:

  • Follow SHOW Baldwin on social media for updates and event information

  • Donate through their official fundraising platforms

  • Attend the Gratitude Gala on June 13th

  • Volunteer your time at events or outreach efforts

  • Share their mission to help more families find these resources

Because at the end of the day, organizations like SHOW Baldwin shouldn't have to carry this alone.
