Alabama's prison system has drawn increasing national attention in recent years, but for many families across the state, concerns about conditions and systemic failures are longstanding.
In a recent episode of Make It Make Sense, Alabama, hosts Neeli Faulkner and Whitney Scapecchi spoke with gubernatorial candidate Dr. Will Boyd about a range of issues affecting the state, including criminal justice reform, education funding, and economic opportunity.
The discussion centered on what Boyd described as a broader, underlying issues impacting residents statewide.
"Alabamians do not have a fair shot."
Boyd pointed to limited access to healthcare, infrastructure challenges, and economic inequality as contributing factors that continue to affect quality of life across Alabama.
Focus on Prison System Conditions
A significant portion of the conversation addressed Alabama's prison system, which Boyd described as overcrowded and under-resourced.
According to Boyd, the system faces multiple challenges, including overcrowding, high recidivism rates, limited access to mental health services, and delays within the parole process.
Faulkner, whose investigative work focuses mostly on wrongful convictions, noted that many of the issues remain largely misunderstood by the general public. She emphasized that public awareness often increases only when individuals or families are directly affected by the system.
Will Boyd's Proposed Prison Reform Measures
During the interview, Boyd outlined several proposals aimed at addressing systemic issues within Alabama's correctional system.
These include:
Conducting an immediate audit of the prison and parole system
Implementing presumptive parole for eligible individuals
Establishing clearer timelines and transparency in parole decisions
Expanding rehabilitation and reentry programs
Boyd also proposed the creation of a publicly accessible dashboard to track prison population data, conditions, and outcomes.
Debate Surrounding "The Alabama Solution"
The discussion also touched on The Alabama Solution, a documentary that has brought national attention to prison conditions in the state.
Faulkner criticized recent media coverage that she said minimizes or dismisses the issues highlighted in the film, arguing that such narratives overlook the experiences of incarcerated individuals and their families.
The exchange reflects a broader divide between public perception and ongoing reporting on conditions within Alabama's correctional facilities.
Education Lottery Remains a Key Issue
In addition to criminal justice reform, the interview addresses the ongoing debate over establishing a state lottery in Alabama.
Boyd argued that Alabama residents already contribute to lottery-funded programs in neighboring states, while the state itself does not benefit from that revenue. He estimated that a state lottery could generate between $200 million and $1 billion annually, with funds directed toward education.
CHOOSE Act and Public School Funding
The conversation also examined Alabama's CHOOSE Act, which expands school choice through education savings accounts.
Boyd expressed opposition to the policy, stating that diverting funds from public schools could exacerbate existing disparities.
